-Re: recent discussions of the original origins of modern designs… Today, having a bit too much free time on my hands, I made an interesting discovery. The Charles Eames so-called “space age” end tables and tables and eiffel chair actually originate in 61 A.D. in Petronius Arbiter’s Satyricon amid typical debaucherous scenes of that period. What was Mr. Eames reading? Below you can see the Eames models compared with the actually very archaic originals.
The picture might not have been drawn in 61 A.D. but it would still be much older than Eames’ designs. Was the artist depicting historically accurate furniture or embellishing? Either way it was still well before Eames’ work.
